A loader can be a huge asset on a variety of job sites. However, loaders come in many different types, and it may not be obvious which one you should purchase. That is why Tatum Motor Company has created this guide to help you pick the loader that is right for you.

Similarities and Differences Between Types

At the most basic level, all loaders share a few key features. The main difference between types is how they move around and how they are controlled. These differences offer unique advantages, so despite the fact that all loaders can more or less perform the same tasks, some types may be better suited to a particular job than others.

Skid Steer Loaders

Skid steer loaders are operated using joysticks and get around the job site using wheels. One stick drives the right-side wheels forward and backward while the other stick does the same for the left-side wheels. This creates a skidding motion when the loader turns, hence the name. While this method of control may sound clumsy, it actually grants skid steer loaders impressive agility, allowing them to maneuver around obstacles and handle tight turns with ease.

Track Loaders

Track loaders move around on tracks, which are usually made from rubber. Since these tracks evenly distribute weight, these loaders are great for soft terrain like snow and mud where other loaders might sink. These loaders also generally leave less of an impact on the ground, making them suitable for landscaping projects.

Wheel Loaders

Like skid steer loaders, wheel loaders get around on wheels. The main difference is that rather than joysticks, these loaders use articulated steering. Overall, this method of control is a lot like driving a car, resulting in smoother operation. Wheel loaders also tend to have the operator ride a bit higher up, providing better visibility in high-traffic areas.
