Founding
On October 2nd, 1945, barely a month after the end of World War II, Mahindra & Mohammed was founded by brothers KC and JC Mahindra and their partner Ghulam Mohammed. In the beginning, the company primarily traded steel out of their home base in Mumbai. They then obtained license to build vehicles for Willys Jeep, which got them their start in light commercial vehicle manufacturing.
Two years later, when 1947 saw the partition between India and Pakistan, Ghulam Mohammed moved to Pakistan to take up the post of the new nation’s first Finance Minister. The Mahindra brothers, now sole owners of their company, renamed it “Mahindra & Mahindra.”
Only ten short years after its founding, Mahindra & Mahindra was ready to go public. Three years after that, stocks hit the Bombay Stock Exchange. Shortly afterwards, the company partnered with the acclaimed American agricultural manufacturer International Harvester in order to produce tractors. In a matter of decades, Mahindra became India’s best-selling tractor brand, a distinction it has maintained since the 1980s.
Mahindra Group
Mahindra spent many of its formative years joining up with companies and businesses across the globe to branch into more and more industries, including British Telecom, Automobiles Peugeot France, International Tractor Company of India, and Maxi Motors Financial Services Limited. This eventually led to the formation of Mahindra Group, an India-based conglomerate that manages every one of the company’s various brands and services.
By 1994, Mahindra Group decided to split up into strategic business units in order to reorganize the company more efficiently. The six units were finalized as Automotive, Farm Equipment, IT, Infrastructure Development Services, Steel Trading, and Financial Services. Each of the branches is responsible for developing its own products, and overall the company is proudly represented in 22 key industries. Their soaring success landed Mahindra 17th place on the 2018 list of Fortune India 500 companies.
Farm Equipment
Throughout their expansions and successes in various industries, Mahindra never forgot its roots in agricultural machinery, in part thanks to its status as India’s leading tractor manufacturer for 40 years and running. Mahindra tractors are world-renowned and incredibly popular in the United States, and Mahindra remains the world’s best-selling tractor brand by sheer volume, with millions of satisfied customers in over 40 countries. They sell these tractors because each one is designed to boost production and efficiency at a great value.
Not only are the machines themselves worthy of accolades, but the many tractor implements available for a Mahindra tractor add versatility and utility to every model. Whether you want help threshing, harvesting, baling, sowing, or preparing the land, there’s a Mahindra tractor and implement perfectly designed to get your work done.
